Let's see if disabling URLs keeps the spammers away. If not, moderation begins.

In Firefox 2 beta the icons today appear in a column rather than a row, making the boxes rather tall!
Longtime user
Ahhh, that's better!
MATadmin
Well I didn't change anything! Still, I'm always willing to look into any persistent display issues.
Longtime user
It was probably Firefox 2 beta... I've seen similar but inconsistent weirdness in other cases.

of all the software ive found serials for, iConquer has def been the most resilient prog. Any tips? danke schoen
Radical Suggestion
Buy it?

Whatever. In site news, VersionTracker seems to have started inserting tracking images in their RSS feed descriptions. I can't do anything now, but if they keep it up into next week, I will definitely begin stripping them out.
MATadmin
There, that's better. :)
MATadmin
Hmmm; the search layout in the header only looks good with Safari. I'm not sure where else to put it without cluttering up the page. Suggestions welcome!
MATadmin
Comment spammers win; moderation is now enabled.
Paul
Great idea, nicely executed.
MATadmin
Updated to use Google Custom Search Engine, which makes both the layout and results much better.
MATadmin
The VersionTracker feed was screwed up all weekend and still hasn't been updated. I'll tweak it on this end if they don't fix it soon.
MATadmin
It's cleared up now, although they have changed their versioning to list without a delimiter, like MacUpdate.
MATadmin
It also looks like VT has mixed some Windows software in their Mac feed. What a mess . . .
MATadmin
Went with making the entire "last seen" line light blue. It is still overridden by the green for new software, should they happen to coincide.
MATadmin
Upgraded to highlight the last release seen and not just the last full hour. It's a larger cookie, but worth it!
Carrie
How many hours worth apps is in MAT RSS feed?
Jackson
Where are August 14th and 13th pages?
MATadmin
The feed is currently 12 hours of releases. We really should have an archive of old News stories on the site . . .
Carrie
Could you please add 24 hour or even longer feeds. Now i lose updates because i don't have RSS-reader running all the time. Thx
Andre
I don't mind the feeds broken down by day but I do wish previous days feeds were archived. It's hard to catch up after vacation!
MATadmin
That's not really the problem feeds solve. You can go back as many days as you want from the site itself.
Carrie&Sarah
It's ok to us if you add feed with ads. What if you have 2 feeds, one with ads and another without? That would be cool. Or maybe someone with lots of bandwidth/cpu could host larger feed.
MATadmin
It's not a particularly great burden, just an incremental expense to cover.
Mario
Great site! One thing bugs me: in the RSS feed, could you link each article to the entry for the product, instead of to the main MAT page?
MATadmin
We don't (yet!) have pages for each product. The feed does still link to software pages on the sites we aggregate.
Concerned User
Has anyone tried downloading the "Daedalus" beta? It linked to a file "Mp3Usher.jar" -Even if I liked that kind of music, it still smells like a Trojan to me...
MATadmin
A quick peek didn't show anything awful OR useful. A pointless download, but not obviously dangerous at this point.
MATadmin
Softpedia is officially gone. Xilisoft and ImTOO got in on the video spam act and there were no signs of Softpedia stopping it.
SarahD
I would like to see Softpedia updates. Did you contact Softpedia and ask them to fix this in their end? How many percent of apps are only in Softpedia, i mean how many updates we dont see now at all?
MATadmin
The more pertinent question for aggregation is what they duplicate. If they have have a large % of unique releases, there is no difficulty in using them directly.
Harriet
Are you planning to add App Store feeds? link
MATadmin
Probably not. Our focus is on gathering dups from multiple places, whereas the App Store is single-sourced by design.
403 Error
Hey, my friend tries to hit the site and gets a 403 error... but it works fine for me... the only difference I can tell is our IP addresses.... we're both on stanford campus.. Ideas ?
MATadmin
I'm guessing their IP is 128.12.176.129, which was blocked a while ago for suspicious activities.
Dre
I'm now getting a 403 error from 128.223.58.98 (a campus IP, ironically). I check the site daily but that's it. Can you unblock me?
MATadmin
Blocking is based on repeated bad requests. I see, back to the beginning of just this month, 5 odd requests for /ht (which does not exist). Can you explain that?
Dre
I cannot. I check your page once each work day using a bookmark. I did switch to a beta of Firefox 3. I wonder if that's doing something weird.
MATadmin
Rechecking the logs shows the errors (including from other IPs) using Firefox/3.1b2. Please raise the issue with the Mozilla folks, and I'll unblock you when I can be certain the problem is fixed.
MATadmin
First new message with the new engine.
MATadmin
And a second, hopefully final, check.
MATadmin
In case anybody was wondering, yes, the VersionTracker feed seems to have been broken on their end for the last couple days.
MATadmin
VT lives again!
MATadmin
... and apparently quickly died again. Keeps reverting back to listings from August 24th for some reason. Here's hoping they get a stable fix in place by the weekend.

Now that MAT is closing soon, anybody planning to create similar website than MAT is? Maybe using Web scraping/parsing VersionTracker?
